A selection of queries (hard drives and phones)

Icon saying What a varied world we live in – in terms of data recovery I thought I’d list some of the latest queries that have come into the data recovery centre. As you learn if you read the blog, we can get the data back from most hard drives and phones!

  • Run-over iPad Air. Buckled, glass all smashed but internals intact. Won’t connect to iTunes when plugged in. Any way to bypass charging cable and connect via internals?
  • External hard drive fell from sofa armrest while attached to laptop. It didn’t hit the ground as the USB cable stopped it. It did hit the armrest but not particularly hard.
  • I have a Seagate expansion external hard drive. I dropped on floor today and now its making a buzzing sound when I connect to my Mac. I am based in Chessington in Surrey
  • Hard drive suddenly stopped working, OS will not boot. The disk is spinning and it is clicking constantly. OS started as Windows Vista and has been upgraded over the years to Window 10.
  • I have a 2TB WD ‘My Passport X’ which I’ve had for a matter of months and it has failed. It won’t show on my mac and when plugged in, it bleeps 9 times, then 3, then 3. Please can you provided me with a quote to recover the data from it?
  • I have an external 8TB drive that is no longer being read by my PC. It fell off my desk and now Windows makes the sound to indicate it has been connected but it doesn’t appear on the list in explorer. There is approximately 4TB worth of data on there, that is very valuable. Ironically I bought the drive to keep it all safe and secure. Could you give me an estimate on the cost to recover the data?
  • My external hard drive has failed. It’s a 1TB drive which was about 50% used. Files are mainly documents, pictures and music files. I have a new external hard drive to move the data onto. it was formatted to MAC. Are you able to recover the files and put onto the new hard drive
  • I have a Seagate external hard drive with 10 years worth of photos (every photo of my daughter) which stopped working out of the blue. As far as I know it wasn’t dropped or knocked. I had a local IT company look at it and he said that it looked like the drive has failed. The drive does attempt to spin up however it fails and then goes back into standby. He attempted to get a new PCB board for it but couldnt get the exact one. He said that a specialised company could still retrieve the date, so basically I am looking for advice

So there we have a varied selection of data recovery enquiries – please if you would like me to look to retrieve the files from any faulty or broken device you may have, get in touch.

Trust button on iPhone

Here’s an interesting post about the trust button on an iPhone not working. To get around the issue of access the data again I used the http://phone-recovery.pen.io/ link. Please read the article and follow the links where necessary.

I have an iphone 7 and the screen is broken and not possible to fix from what the shops are saying. One shop did manage to put my security code in, but when trying to retrieve messages, they couldn’t manage to press the “trust button“? I need to simply retrieve text messages, as have important one’s, that I need from my ex-wife, as currently have a court case regarding access to my son.

Trust button on iPhone

My phone dropped in water.
I’ve been told that there is a problem with my motherboard.
Could you please recover my data and may I know how much that will be?

I phone 6 dropped in water yesterday, notes did not back up to I cloud are you able to help recover them?

My GF Deleted some photo from a s7 edge and i want the photo back Its posibile ???
i dropped my Samsung galaxy A3 in water
it turns on but doesn’t recognise sim card
it charges but does not allow me to transfer media from phone storage to laptop/new phone
I also lost my whatapp pictures and on my iPhone the Trust button is not showing so I can’t connect to any other devices.
I really need my contacts
please can you help retrieve my contacts and media from phone storage…??
I have can bring the phone to you in a central London location (Dataclinic are on Lombard Street) as soon as possible

I have an iPhone 6 that was dropped in water last Friday, I kept it in rice and on the radiator for 3-4 days and it did turn on briefly but since then it is completely dead despite charging it, I have since read online that trying to turn it on and charging it is the worst thing to do and unfortunately I did this. My phone wasn’t backed up and I have years of photos on my phone that I really would like to get back if possible. I’ve an idea to use the trust button feature to copy my data off but of course I can’t turn the phone on to do this. Can you help?

Data Recovery on NAS requested

Synology logoThe following 3 NAS data loss problems are best addressed by links to these two previous posts: https://harddriveman.com/2017/07/01/hdd-and-nas-data-recovery-required/ and https://harddriveman.com/2017/04/06/synology-nas-data-recovery/.

My Synology DS1813+ NAS (data sheet here) is showing that I have a volume crash and that it is unable to use the volume. I am unable to back up the data as there is 25TB+ across 8 different sized disks and I don’t have anything that will hold that much – also I have no idea how I would back up the data even if I could. I don’t mind losing some data but I’d like to salvage as much as possible as this includes a lot of both personal and business files collected over several years – is this doable or have I lost everything?
I had recently removed and replaced a 2TB disk with a new 8TB disk and the NAS was going through the repair process. At about 20% my property had a power cut that turned the NAS off mid-process. When I powered it back on the beeping started and after the NAS went through a checking process a message appeared stating “Unable to use this volume. The data in the volume may be crashed. Please try to back up the data before removing the volume.“. I’ve tried rebooting the NAS but this hasn’t helped.

My external NAS hard drive was dropped today from approx 3ft. It’s a 2x2Tb WD passport ultra. Initially my computer allowed me to access the data once, but has not allowed me to since. My laptop will recognise that something is plugged into the USB port but will not let me access it. When I do, it gives “I/O device error” message. Occasionally, once in the 10mins I had the drive plugged in, it made a beep noise. It does also take a while for the laptop to recognise that the drive is connected.

I have two external NAS hard drives that do not appear on my Computer when they are plugged in. It’s been years since I tried, but I know there are documents there. Movies, pictures, sound effects, etc. one is 1tb, the other is 2tb.

Drive not responding in Liverpool and London

I had a RAID 1 (mirror) with 2 x 2TB drives.
One of these drives (A) was accidentally taken away and some of the files deleted, this was then put back into the computer and it was hoped the files still on drive B would be restored to A.
However it seems the computer instead proceeded to update B by starting to delete files? Im not sure if this bit is true?
This update process was stopped by powering off after about 2 minutes, so it is hoped most of the missing files are still on drive B. The drive B no longer boots, drive A still boots its original OS (Fedora 20) but the deleted files on there cannot be recovered. Using a system rescue CD no other data was found.
Do you think there is a chance of getting the data, can you do it, and how much will it cost including postage (liverpool) and I’m considering using Datlabs data recovery, to restore my files.

lots of hard drives

I have a 500GB Xenta External Hard Drive that has been dropped from table height. It powers up but is not discoverable on a pc. It makes a clicking sound every 5-10 seconds which I believe to be the arm on the hard drive. I would like some information on how much it would cost to recover data from this drive and the time scale of which this would take.
Due to work operation times I can only be contacted on the email address provided above

Whilst on the subject of Datlabs, I need data recovery myself: My Lacie external hard drive (500MB) was working ok early on Saturday morning, then when returning to take some music files off to burn on CD, it just starting to make a clicking noise repeatedly & then what seems like a scratching noise and a small beeping, and would not show up as a plugged icon my laptop, Windows did show a message stating this USB could not connect to the computer. the light on the front comes on and i need to recover the data. I’m in Liverpool, near Exchange Flags.

This, 500GB Western Digital Hard Drive has failed. We need to retrieve as much of the data (documents) as possible. It spins but clicks and does not read data. Has not been dropped or submerged. Mechanical/Laser failure?
Tameem at UCL IT recommended you on London. They are not willing to open the drive to check workings.

I have a damaged flash drive and was wondering if you would be able to fix it and recover the data on it?
How much would it cost and how long would it take?
I am based close to King’s cross and Russell square.

Hard drive was dropped then suffer from high electrical power .
Data Recovery needed fixing the hard drive not necessarily.

Need help with hard drives

When the hard drive is connected, it is recognized but does not open in My Computer.
It is a 2TB Western Digital Elements external hard drive.
When it is connected, it freezes the entire computer but does not open. Upon disconnection, the computer unfreezes and continues normal operation.

Have a Samsung D3 external harddrive. Laptop stopped recognising the drive. Contacted Seagate customer service and they gave me a link to recovery software but this did not work. they thought there might be a physical problem with the drive. On initial recovery scan it showed all file names but there was no content – everything 0 bytes

Undetectable by Windows. D: drive icon just appears then disappears.

My iMac screen went white and when it came back on asked me to do a time machine backup. I clicked yes without realising it would wipe my external hard drive. I’ve cancelled the back up and managed to get the Mac back on, but my external hard dive with all my work and photographs has been wiped. Is it possible to get these files back as I’m a wedding photographer and it had all my weddings on from the past 2 years.

microlite dvr

On my DVR unit (MicroLite II), I cannot playback my recording’s on the DVR unit & my home devices (iPhone, iPad). When I checked my DVR unit it states that HDD 1 is not working. Does that mean I need a new DVR unit or can I get the problem solved?

I dropped water on my Apple MacBook Air – it immediately went black and Apple have written off the laptop (£1650 worth of damage). I would like to try and save the data on the laptop. Please can you advise?

Western Digital Elements 500 gb external hard drive without indipendant power supply.
I have been using the drive fine for a few years recently plugged the hard drive in via USB and get a error message stating the USB Devise is using more power than the USB port can supplie (power surge).
This error occurs when pluggin the drive in to either a iMAC or Windows Laptop system.
I have tried the devise in various USB ports (in both systems), with a USB powered hub and have bought a new USB connection cable and tried the above steps with the new cable.

Data Recovery from Lightroom

This hard-drive failed a coupe of years ago when running Lightroom, and was making a ticking sound. I had it looked at at the time by Data Recovery Tips [http://data-recovery-tips.co.uk/] who were excellent and said the sound is caused by the heads moving back and forward from each extreme in attempt to read the data from the disk and felt that this was because the heads have degraded. At the time I couldn’t afford the recovery but would now like to have this recovered. Could you please provide a quote? Do you do no recovery no fee?

lightroom

I’m having issues with a 2TB seagate 2.5 inch external drive. I recently had to move the drive into a new enclosure as the USB connection on the original Seagate case had failed. This replacement case worked for a good month or two however I’ve been having issues accessing the drive properly recently. Initially it would unmount itself randomly, however this soon progressed to not mounting at all. Then it became incredibly slow/unreadable by my Mac. I primarily use the drive for photo storage and it contains my Lightroom catalog data and backups. The vast majority of my recent work is on there. I have tried several times to check the drive with Apple disk utility but it either un-mounts or fails to be read. I have also tried copying data to a new drive but it will unmount before it can finish the transfer. It doesn’t appear to be making any strange noises and to my knowledge it has not been dropped. Wondering if you could give me a rough estimate for a repair? Or if I’m better to bring it in for appraisal and if there is a cost associated with this?

Hard drive has died (clicking) and I need important documents from it for my master’s thesis

Have tried to retrieve data from external drive today and got error message on two laptops – drive structure is corrupted, unable to read data. The laptops both see the drive, it appears in File Explorer, but them messages comes up when you click to access. Need to retrieve my Adobe Lightroom files.

I have a power connection problem with my hard drive (possibly a shorted diode). Its an old model with its own power supply. I would ideally like it repaired but would also be interested in a quote to just recover the data.
Please now contact via email as I will be in the office and unable to answer calls.

Believe the hard drive has been dropped – making a ticking noise.

Recovering Hard Drive Data

Two disks part of Seagate Business NAS (2-disk array) in RAID1. One disk does 2 “beeping” sounds and then stops spinning and is therefore inaccessible. A technician friend thought the head could be stuck and opened the drive to check, but this wasn’t the case. The other disk sounds fine but has several I/O errors making data recovery impossible (tried with ddrecover, extremely slow and finally process aborted). I fortunately got it recovered by the technical wizards at Datlabs (url: http://www.datlabsdatarecovery.co.uk/), but now I also have these drives that need recovering:

Hard drive recoveryI have a 500GB Maxtor external hard drive which has failed to load. It’s been in my drawer for about a year and when I brought it out it would not work. You can hear the disk spinning but nothing else happens

Connected samsung external 500gb hard drive, lights flashing but no connection, can hear some strange sound from hard drive. Transferring video files from drive succesfully. Drive then failed to recognised the files on the drive. Drive stopped working.

WD Elements, about 3 years old. Medium use, no knocks I’m aware of. Flashing light, normal sounds, not able to access from any PC I’ve tried. Identified as “local disc” on Explorer, but not able to open.

Dropped an external Seagate hard drive (G Drive 1 TB) on hard floor. When plugged in it makes a loud buzzing sound and does not show up on computer screen. Is there anything that can be done to recover files ?

I have a problem with a Western Digital 1TB drive, I think the board or maybe the disk heads are dead because it spins and after about 5 seconds there is a slight click noise (click of death maybe?). When attached to the ubs port (windows, mac, and linux) the OS recognize that it is plugged in and some times it even shows me the mounted drive, but I cannot enter to see the files. I wonder how much would you charge me to recover the files.

Connection on my toshiba dtb305 (https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00KWHJT7Q/ref=od_aui_detailpages00?ie=UTF8&psc=1) has broken off and will not connect. Not too bothered about the hard drive but would like to recover the data on it. Can you please provide a price for data recovery?

HDD and Nas data recovery required

I spoke with one of your team earlier this week re data recovery from my 3 TB seagate nas drive? (as described at http://www.dataclinic.co.uk/nas-data-recovery/). I would like to go ahead with this, I understand the cost is likely to be £350 Inc vat plus the cost of a device to transfer the data to. Please can you email me re details of your collection service I live in Perth?

My WD MyBook external harddrive is no longer being recognised by my pc. It comes on for a few momments and then stops. Could you tell me how it would cost to repair the drive and/or recover the files that are on it ?

The motherboard of my USB hdd is broken

Dell inspiron, windows 7 laptop started overheating and turning off. Started beeping inside and only would load dell logo but couldn’t get to windows, a friend has tried accessing my data and failed.

Verbatim hdd

Device Type:Verbatim 53010 500GB USB 2.0 – 2.5 inch
I tried several cables to connect, but it couldn’t be read. I am not quite sure whether it’s just the problem of the female port. Or the disk has broken. The data stored on the disk is really important. So I don’t want any damage to it.
1. How much it costs to recover?
2. How long it takes to recover?
3. Do you collect and deliver the device?

QNAP TS-EC880U-RP lost all configuration following power cycle.
Can access NAS via Qfinder and SSH/TELNET – disks look OK, but config data gone.
Flashed firmware/DOM and upgraded to latest version (4.3.3) – no joy.
MDADM indicates NAS currently thinks is has a 24 disk RAID1 array
In reality, this is a 8 bay rackmount and was running 2 RAID5 arrays (4 disks in each)
Disks are WD RED NAS models (4x3TB + 4x4TB)

WD My Passport Ultra 3TB External HDD USB 3.0
Hard Drive was dropped during use. When powered the HDD clicks and spins down.
The HDD was assessed by a different data recovery company (within a clean lab) and has damaged read/write heads. I’d like a quote on the repair of my HDD or Recovery of all Data.

I’ve got a seagate hard drive that has stopped working. I have contacted seagate and said that it has been broken. It’s a NAS and I need data recovery.

My Toshiba 1TB external hard drive is showing the “format disc” message when booting up. I need to get my files off it. There is about 39GB of data on it. How much is this likely to cost and how long does the procedure take?

Hard drive just stopped working after 2 years service. Now not recogniseable in bios. Drive still spins.. Looking for a quote to repair if possible. Seagate barracuda 2tb 3.5 drive.

My hard drive dropped and since then it hasn’t been able to read on my mac, it is making a wild noise. How can this be resolved? I have a lot of data back up on it

iPhone Problems

I plugged my iPhone 6 into my laptop to sync it with iTunes and then import my photos and videos, but before I could do that, iTunes asked me to update the iOS. I clicked yes and then the update malfunctioned. I followed the instructions at https://support.apple.com/en-gb/HT203122 but my phone will not work and has ‘support.apple.com/iphone/restore at the top of the screen and then the iTunes logo. It’s wants me and to restore it which I do not want to do as I have very important and sentimental photos and videos and restoring will clear all data. Are you able to recover the photos and videos? The number I have provided is my mother’s, if you could please give her a call as I will be at work without a working phone and tell her if it’s something that you can do and how to go about it and a quote for the work.

I would like my iPhone 4 recovered from when I have run a full factory restore on it, specifically contacts and what’s app messages/info

drowned iphoneMy husband drowned his iphone in the sea and it had all our holiday photos on it. It has not been connected to the iCloud as we’ve been abroad. Would you be able to recover the photos from the water damaged phone? It’s been drying in a box of rice and no attempts have been made to turn it on or charge it.

I have an iphone 6 which has a broken screen. I have mistakenly tried to unlock my phone too many times in order to back up all data to my macbook, however the phone is now disabled and asks me to connect to iTunes. If I proceed with a new screen repair, I will have to restore all my settings and know that the phone memory will be deleted. Should I proceed with the repair, is there any way that you could recover the photos, messages, contacts etc on my phone once a restore has been completed?

It seems obvious to me that many people have having to lose their data on the iPhones when they break.

Phone Data Required

wet phone“I wanted to know if you work with spillages. I had a grease/oil spillage on my phone (OnePlus X) and it’s not turning on/off and not able to charge. Rice didn’t help, of course, as it is not water spillage. Would you be able to clean it / recover it, so that it works? I am not concerned about data on the phone. Also, how much would it cost?

I own an LG G3 and out of the blue have been struck with the ‘green screen of death’. I’m unsure if you’re familiar with this but it’s relating to a kernel error. Safe mode is unavailable so it seems to be a case of performing a factory reset to try to solve the problem.
I have a photo of the wording if it’s helpful but I’m just wondering whether in your experience it’s worth trying to recover the data and if so how much you charge for this.
If you could email me with a response that would be great.”

As long as not too much damage has been done to a mobile smartphone, it is more often than not possible to retrieve the data from it. The method used to recover the data is dependent on how the phone was damaged. Spillages often damage the phone’s circuit board and usually a large internal clean up operation is necessary to remove all the short-circuits. These jobs tend to cost around £300 or so. ‘Green screens of death’ are less of a problem and usually there hasn’t been any damage sustained by the phone, its just a software (or firmware) problem. The cost of data recovery in these cases is around £250.

There are many outlets in the UK that offer smartphone repairs but very few of them have the technical capability to recover the data from a damaged phone. You need to Google ‘data recovery’ and see what you find, alternatively take a look at specialist data recovery blogs such as http://www.recover-deleted-data.co.uk/ to get an insight into the types of problems people have and their recommendations as to how to recover the data.
